Philosophy and Technology

About

I'm a philosopher who builds technology solutions. I've been thinking about how technology changes human work since long before AI became a buzzword.

20+ years at the intersection

After two decades building technology solutions, I've learned that the best AI implementations happen when you understand both technical possibilities and human implications. The most interesting problems span multiple disciplines—and I see AI as part of a longer conversation about technology and human flourishing, not just another business tool.
About Paul

The philosophy advantage

My PhD dissertation was titled "The Ethical Import of Objective and Social Structures in Experience: A study of Dilthey and Heidegger." That's not just academic credentials—it's practical expertise in how ethical decisions get made in complex, real-world situations.

While many consultants discuss AI ethics theoretically, I bring formal ethical training to practical implementations.

This expertise becomes crucial when implementing AI in teams. How do we introduce AI without creating fear? What happens to people's sense of purpose when AI handles their routine work?

These aren't just nice-to-have considerations—they determine whether AI implementations succeed or fail.

From academia to real-world impact

I spent my early career in academia, but I quickly realized I wanted to build solutions, not just analyze problems. That led me to technology consulting at North Highland, where I co-led the technology team and became responsible for tech sales.

We achieved 300% of sales targets by focusing on what clients actually needed, not what was trendy.

But the work that really shaped my approach came later, during crisis leadership at Emory University. When COVID-19 hit, I worked directly with the Provost's leadership to plan the entire high-level approach for academic continuity.

We didn't just transition 205 continuing education courses online in three months—we redesigned how the university thought about digital learning and brought the program back to profitability within two years.

That experience taught me something crucial: the best transformations happen at the team level, with people who are ready to change.

The team revelation

I led 43 systematic AI experiments across 13 work categories. Some teams achieved 50% productivity increases, others saw minimal impact.

The difference wasn't the technology. It was the teams.

Teams That Succeeded

  • Already effective with good processes
  • Clear communication and leadership support
  • Wanted to be great at their work

Teams That Struggled

  • Trying to use AI to fix fundamental problems
  • Poor communication and unclear objectives
  • Resistance to change

This insight became the foundation of my approach: I work with good teams that want to become great.
